WE HELP THE KELP

We want more people to love sugar kelp so we decided to work on creating collective channels to help the kelp get to where it needs to go. We are guided by the principals that farmers should make a living wage, that consuming kelp should leave the planet better than before, and that our local region deserves access to this healthy and sustainable crop (and our local waterways deserve to reap the benefits). The Cooperative is run by 4 farmers but partners with any regional kelp farmer who meets our food safety standards and wants to be a part of Kelp Week.

WHAT WE DO

  • UPLIFT - We are committing to supporting the kelp industry and the environment  by hosting New England Kelp Week each April. Through developing educational kelp programming such as cooking classes, kelp lectures, farm tours and so much more we are able to educate the public and help expand our collective reach. We also support farmers as best we can to ensure kelp is processed and packaged in a way that helps the planet through cost-sharing post harvest materials and lending a hand on farms as needed. We want small farms to succeed.
  • BUY - We buy kelp from local farmers, and because we farm ourselves we understand the true value of the crop.  We pay what sugar kelp is truly worth (not philosophically - we measure the cost of the inputs) in the hopes of encouraging more farmers to follow the zero-input  method of cultivating kelp in southern New England.
  • SELL - We have a large and growing network of chefs, CSAs, farm stands, and markets who are eager to use fresh raw sugar kelp when it's in season. We make sure there is a steady supply of sugar kelp available and facilitate the last mile which is one of the biggest challenges facing farmers. Once the fresh season is over, we leverage our solar-powered seaweed processing facility to dry out kelp for year round use.

Corporate Sponsorship

We take a cooperative approach to all the stuff that happens once sugar kelp leaves the clean ocean waters of New England primarily through developing and executing the New England Kelp Harvest Week;  coordinating marketing, product development, and sales efforts in order to create a pathway for emerging  seaweed farmers in New England to make it work.  We are always looking for sponsors to help fund these activities so the individual farmers do not have to.
